A backflow preventer is a water-quality safety device that keeps dirty water inside your irrigation pipes from contaminating the clean water system that we all enjoy.

Tennessee law requires backflow prevention on all landscape-sprinkler systems, because irrigation is considered a "high-hazard cross connection".

The short answer is no. In order to test backflow devices, you must be certified by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC).

It depends on your district. State water code has required above ground RP devices since 2008. Some districts allow old DC devices as long as they still work.

It depends on a few factors, but on average replacement cost is $2,925. This includes labor, materials, an artificial rock to protect it and the first test submission.

If your purveyor requires a test or update of your backflow prevention system and you choose non-compliance, they may lock your meter or remove it entirely.
